The George Washington University Hospital offers outpatient rehabilitation for those who have or had treatment or surgery for breast cancer. Our certified lymphedema therapists are highly skilled in treating common and unique conditions associated with breast cancer. We offer patients an individualized plan of care to help them overcome impairments and resume their daily activities.
Specialized Breast Cancer Therapy
GW Hospital offers specialized treatments for a wide range of conditions associated to breast cancer, including:
- Lymphedema and swelling after surgery
- Joint pain
- Scar tissue restriction and pain
- Hypersensitive tissue after surgery
- Radiation fibrosis
- Pain after a mastectomy or lumpectomy
- Issues with posture
- Impaired strength and mobility (such as “frozen shoulder”)
- Generalized deconditioning
Comprehensive Rehabilitation Services
Our comprehensive rehabilitation care includes:
- Evaluation before and after surgery, including baseline assessments and lymphedema prevention education
- Instruction on self-care management and how to prevent infection
- Manual lymphatic drainage to reduce swelling and fibrosis
- Reducing scar tissue restriction, pain and appearance
- Therapy to restore posture, strength and functional range of motion
- Specialized compression items to reduce swelling, pain and tenderness
- Individualized home exercise program
