Joseph D. Afram, MD FACS, brings to the George Washington University Hospital's Bariatric Surgery Center over 26 years of experience. A board-certified surgeon, Dr. Afram has a special interest in bariatric surgery. He has performed more than 5,000 bariatric procedures in the past 26 years.

The GWUH Bariatric Surgery program includes a structured behavior modification program in addition to a support group and is managed by experienced dietitians and psychologists. He has been a member of numerous professional societies including the District of Columbia Medical Society, the International Federation of Obesity Surgery and the American Society for Bariatric Surgery. Dr. Afram is a bariatric surgeon at the George Washington University Hospital, and has served as a fellow for both the American College of Surgeons and the International College of Surgeons.

After receiving his medical education at the American University of Beirut in Lebanon in 1976, Dr. Afram completed an internship in general surgery at the Conemaugh Valley Memorial Hospital in Pennsylvania. He completed his residency at Washington Hospital Center and served as the chair of surgery at Columbia Hospital for Women until 2002.
