Bindu Umapathi

Dr. Bindu A. Umapathi, MD, MRCS, FACS is double boarded in General Surgery and Colon and Rectal Surgery. She has a deep interest in treating inflammatory bowel disease; colon cancer; rectal cancer; anorectal disorders including fistulas, hemorrhoids and fissures; and pelvic floor disorders including rectal prolapse and fecal incontinence.

Dr. Umapathi specializes in single incision laparoscopic surgery, robotic abdominal and pelvic surgery, and natural orifice surgery using flexible robotic platforms and advanced endoscopy. Her research interests include cancer biology, patient-centered outcomes after surgery for inflammatory bowel disease, gastrointestinal cancers in the HIV population, healthcare quality and health service delivery. She is well published in nationally and internationally acclaimed journals.

Dr. Umapathi earned her medical degree at the Stanley Medical College and completed residency in General Surgery at the University of Virginia. She completed a subspecialty fellowship in Colon and Rectal Surgery at the Penn State University, Hershey Medical Center. She also received additional specialty training as a Surgical Registrar at the Mersey Deanery, University of Liverpool in the United Kingdom.

Dr. Umapathi is a member of the American College of Colon and Rectal Surgeons and Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh. She is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. She is licensed to practice in DC, Maryland and Virginia.
