Your Hospital Bed
Hospital beds can be adjusted by using the controls on the beds. The beds are equipped with side rails that must be raised while you are asleep or sedated. Should you need assistance, please call your nurse.
All rooms in the hospital are centrally heated and air-conditioned. If the temperature in your room is not comfortable, please notify the nursing station on your unit.
Calling Your Nurse
All rooms, except in the Intensive Care Units and Psychiatric Units, are equipped with an intercom system. Patient bathrooms also are equipped with an emergency call system. You will receive instructions for their use.
During the Night
Please stay in bed after you have been prepared for the night. Strange surroundings and sleeping medications may create a hazard if you get out of bed. For assistance during the night, use your intercom system.
Patient Meal Services
We recognize that food and nutrition play a very important role in your recovery. To serve you better, we have developed a new meal preparation and delivery system that we call At Your Request—Room Service Dining®. This new program gives you greater control over what and when you eat. Using your bedside menu, you may order the meal selections of your choice within the special diet that your physician has prescribed for you.
Simply dial 3663 (FOOD) to place your order with one of our room service operators between 6:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. Your room service operator will assist you with your selections to ensure that your dietary restrictions and nutritional needs are met. Each meal is individually prepared and delivered to your room within 60 minutes. You may also pre-order your meals in advance by calling at any time between 6:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m.
Meal trays are available for your guests at a cost of $5 for breakfast and $7 for lunch or dinner. To order a guest tray, your guest should first see the cashier in the cafeteria to purchase a meal voucher, and then may order via our At Your Request meal service.
Your physician may prescribe a special diet for you while you are in the hospital. The following is a brief description of some of these diets. If you would like further information, please call us at 3663 (FOOD) to request a visit from a registered dietitian.
- NPO (Nothing Per Oral) – no foods or liquids are allowed and no tray will be delivered
- Clear Liquid – Includes liquids or foods that are see-through and liquid at room temperature, such as broth, gelatin and many fruit juices
- Full Liquid – Liquids or foods that are liquid at room temperature including all items listed in the clear liquid diet as well as milk, tomato soup, ice cream and pudding
- Regular – Includes all menu items with no restrictions
- Cardiac – Includes foods that are low in cholesterol, saturated fat and salt
- Consistent Carbohydrate – Restricts foods with added sugar and calls for a controlled carbohydrate intake throughout the day
- Gluten Free - Limits proteins which are found in wheat, barley and rye.
- Mechanical Soft – Eliminates foods that are difficult to chew such as raw vegetables, many raw fruits, and meats that have not been chopped
- Low Sodium – Limits foods that have a high salt content
- Low Residue – Limits foods that are high in fiber including many raw fruits, vegetables and whole grains
- Low Fat – Includes foods that are low in saturated fat and cholesterol
- Renal – Limits total protein as well as foods that are high in salt, potassium and phosphorus
- Dialysis – Limits foods that are high in salt, potassium and phosphorus

Color television sets are provided in each room for your enjoyment and can be controlled through your intercom system. Please be considerate of others in their use.

Please give your telephone number to friends and family so they can dial you directly. Outgoing calls can be made at any time. Incoming calls can be received only between 7 a.m. – 10 p.m. If you do not want to receive phone calls, inform the nurse, who will arrange to restrict your calls.
To make a local call: Dial 9 and the ten-digit number.
To make a long distance call or toll call: Dial 9 + 0 + area code and the number. (Long distance calls cannot be charged to your room. You can use a telephone calling card or make a collect call.)
Please Do Not Leave the Unit
In the interest of patient safety and security, patients are encouraged to remain on their assigned floors. Patients should not leave the floor without permission from the nurse.
Furthermore, regulatory agencies prohibit inpatients from entering the cafeteria or gift shop. Due to safety, risk management and patient care concerns, patients are prohibited from leaving the building for any reasons except to obtain scheduled medical services while escorted by hospital personnel.
