Physician Biography
Fred Brody, MD, is a professor of surgery at the George Washington University Medical Center and serves as both director of the Minimally Invasive Surgery Center and the Washington Institute of Surgical Endoscopy. Dr. Brody is an active member of the Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgery (SAGES), the American College of Surgeons and the Society of Surgeons of the Alimentary Tract. He is a board certified, general surgeon and a fellow of the American College of Surgeons.

Dr. Brody's clnical expertise is in laparoscopic surgery, particularly stomach, spleen, adrenals, pancreas, hernias, colon, esophagus and gallbladder surgery.  His research interests include clinical trials regarding innovative laparoscopic techniques as well as basic science studies of the G.I. tract.

Dr Brody has been invited to speak to many groups in the U.S. and abroad. His lectures include, "Laparoscopic Management of Pancreatic Disease," "Laparoscopic Management of Gastroesophageal Disease", "Laparoscopic Splenectomy", "Laparoscopic Median Arcuate Ligament Release for Celiac Artery Disease" and "Laparoscopic Management of Gastroparesis." He is widely published in prominent journals including The American Journal of Surgery, Surgical Endoscopy, Archives of Surgery, Surgery, and The Journal of Gastrointestinal Surgery. Dr. Brody has authored approximately 100 original manuscripts.

As a result of his research, Dr. Brody has earned numerous rewards and professional appointments.  He has held several national appointments with Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons including Chair of the Membership Committee and he is currently the Chair of the Development Committee.  He is also completing his second term on the SAGES Board of Governors.

Dr. Brody received his undergraduate and medical degrees from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He completed his residency at The George Washington University Medical Center and subsequently completed a fellowship in laparoscopic surgery at Duke University Medical Center. After finishing fellowship, he served as an attending surgeon with a major emphasis in laparoscopic surgery at The Cleveland Clinic Foundation for five years before accepting his current position.
