Farid Gharagozloo, MD, is an expert in the fields of general surgery, thoracic surgery and cardiovascular surgery. He is the chief of clinical cardiothoracic surgery and a clinical professor of surgery at The George Washington University Medical Center. Previously, Dr. Gharagozloo directed the division of cardiothoracic surgery and carried the titles of cardiothoracic surgeon-in-chief and director of The Washington Institute of Surgical Endoscopy. He currently serves as the surgeon-in-chief at the Washington Institute of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery.

Dr. Gharagozloo earned his medical degree at Johns Hopkins University in Maryland and served as an instructor in human anatomy while attending the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. He completed his residency in general surgery and thoracic and cardiovascular surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. In addition, he pursued further training in cardiac surgery research as an extracorporeal fellow at the Harvard Medical School.

Dr. Gharagozloo has received numerous awards throughout his career including several academic scholarships at the Johns Hopkins University. While completing his residency at the Mayo Clinic, he was honored as “Resident Teacher of the Year.” He was also awarded the “Clagett Travel Award” under the division of thoracic and cardiovascular surgery at the Mayo Clinic.

A well-known lecturer and author, he has published over 56 peer-reviewed publications, and has served as a contributing author to Sabiston’s Textbook of Surgery. He has received grants from Ethicon Corporation and the American Heart Association. His research interests include robotic surgery of the lung, esophagus and the mediastinum, video-assisted chest surgery, surgery for the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and transendocardial laser myocardial revascularization.

Dr. Gharagozloo’s professional memberships include the Southern Thoracic Surgical Association, the Society of Thoracic Surgeons and the American College of Surgeons. In addition, he has participated in the Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons, Thoracoscopy Society of Arizona and the Priestly Society of Surgery.
