The Acute Rehabilitation Team at The George Washington University Hospital strives to help individuals whose functional skills have been limited by an illness or injury. We treat patients with the goal of providing the skills they need to live as independently as possible after leaving our facility.
Our rehabilitation goals for patients affected by stroke include but are not limited to:
- Increase self-care skills
- Improve psychological adjustment
- Improve self-image
- Improve mobility, health and independence
- Maximize the ability to enjoy life
- Educate the patient and family
- Prevent secondary complications and secondary stroke
We help patients achieve their goals with the following treatment and services:
- Training in activities of daily living (eating, bathing, dressing, etc.)
- Speech-language therapy
- Swallowing skills assessment and management
- Bowel and bladder training
- Family conferences
- Patient and family education
- Self-medication training
- Behavioral intervention
- Wheelchair positioning and mobility training
- Community re-entry activities
- Weekly support groups
- Pet and art therapy
The Acute Rehabilitation Unit at GW Hospital strives to consistently meet and exceed national benchmark standards. Functional Independence Measurement (FIM) scores refer to a scale that measures a patient’s ability to function independently. The Acute Rehabilitation Team uses these scores as primary indicators of patient progress.
