The Acute Rehab Team at The George Washington University Hospital strives to assist individuals who have experienced an illness or injury that limits their abilities to function. Our goal is to help patients develop the skills they need to live as independently as possible after leaving our facility. Acute rehabilitation consists of at least three to five hours of therapy per day, five days a week. Our contemporary, all-private 16-bed unit is located on the fourth floor of the new George Washington University Hospital.

We commonly treat the following conditions:

• Brain injury
• Arthritis
• Multiple trauma
• Strokes
• Spinal cord injury
• Neurological disorders
• Amputation
• Orthopaedic injuries

The Acute Rehabilitation Center accepts patients who:

• Need daily access to a rehabilitation physician who will oversee the patient’s medical needs and functional plan of care
• Require 24-hour rehabilitative nursing
• Are able to tolerate a relatively intense therapy program consisting of at least three hours of therapy (PT, OT or speech) five days a week or have the potential to build up to this within 10 days
• Need at least two types of therapy
• Have the ability to achieve rehabilitation goals in a reasonable time period

Experienced, licensed clinicians develop an individualized treatment program for each patient based on a comprehensive evaluation at the time of admission. Depending on individual needs, a patient’s treatment team may consist of a physiatrist, physical therapist, occupational therapist, speech/language pathologist, rehabilitation nurse, a social worker and psychologist.

Program goals may include:

• Increased independence with activities of daily living
• Increased mobility
• Patient and family education
