GW Hospital is accredited as a Bariatric Center of Excellence by the American Society for Bariatric Surgery.

Breast Imaging Center of Excellence
The GW Breast Center has been awarded Center of Excellence status by the American College of Radiology (ACR). By awarding facilities the status of a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence, the ACR recognizes breast imaging centers that have earned accreditation in all of the College's voluntary, breast-imaging accreditation programs and modules, in addition to the mandatory Mammography Accreditation Program.  The MRI is accredited by the American College of Radiology specifically for breast imaging.

Breast Center Accreditation
The George Washington University Hospital Breast Care Center has been awarded a full accreditation designation for three years by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC), a program administered by the American College of Surgeons. Accreditation by the NAPBC is given only to centers that have voluntarily committed to provide the highest level of quality breast care, and undergo a rigorous evaluation process and review of their performance.

2010 Outstanding Achievement Award Granted to GW Hospital
The Commission on Cancer (CoC) of the American College of Surgeons has granted its 2010 Outstanding Achievement Award to George Washington University Hospital's Cancer Center, making it part of a select group of currently accredited and newly accredited cancer programs across the United States. Established in 2004, the CoC Outstanding Achievement Award (OAA) is designed to recognize cancer programs that strive for excellence in providing quality care to cancer patients. The award is granted to facilities that demonstrate a Commendation level of compliance with six standards that represent five areas of cancer program activity to include cancer committee leadership, cancer data management, research, community outreach and quality improvement.

GW’s cancer program received a three Accreditation with Commendation in September 2010.

Blue Distinction Center for Complex and Rare Cancers®
March 2008--GW Hospital has been designated a CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield Blue Distinction Center for Complex and Rare Cancers®. The designation focuses on the following 13 cancers: bladder cancer, brain cancer—primary, esophageal cancer, gastric cancer, liver cancer—primary, pancreatic cancer, rectal cancer, acute leukemia (inpatient, non-surgical), bone cancer—primary, head and neck cancers, ocular melanoma, soft tissue sarcoma and thyroid cancer—medullary or anaplastic. Blue Distinction Centers for Complex and Rare Cancers were developed in strategic collaboration with the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN).

Aetna Institutes of Quality Cardiac Care

January 2011— George Washington University Hospital met Aetna criteria, based on evaluation of  clinical performance and overall value of the facility, and is now designated as an Aetna Institutes of Quality Cardiac Care for:

• Cardiac Surgery
• Cardiac Medical Interventions
• Cardiac Rhythm Disorders

Care First Blue Cross Blue Shield Designates GW Hospital a “Blue Distinction Center”

AHA 2008 Grassroots Champion

April 14, 2008—Richard Davis, GW Hospital’s Chief Financial Officer, was named American Hospital Association’s 2008 Grassroots Champion. The award honors a hospital leader who has effectively educated public officials on major issues affecting the hospital’s vital role in the community. His work regarding uncompensated care and analysis has proven to be invaluable to healthcare in the District.

COO Kimberly Russo Named Modern Healthcare "Up and Comer"

September 13, 2010—Kimberly Russo, Chief Operating Officer at The George Washington University Hospital, has been recognized as an "Up and Comer" in the September 13, 2010 issue of Modern Healthcare magazine. Regional Transplant Consortium Award

February 21, 2008—The George Washington University Hospital has been acknowledged for the first time by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) for its leadership role in organ donation. As part of the HHS Organ Donation Breakthrough Collaborative, the Hospital has achieved an organ donation rate of 75%; the national average rate is 60%.

GW Hospital Designated a Blue Distinction Center for Knee and Hip Replacement

CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield has designated The George Washington University Hospital a Blue Distinction Center for Knee and Hip ReplacementSM, part of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association’s expansion of its Blue Distinction®  designation.

DC Hospital Association Patient Safety Award

The George Washington University Hospital was one of three hospitals in the District of Columbia to receive the DC Hospital Association’s Patient Safety Award for speedy, 24 hours a day/7 days a week coverage for ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI), a type of heart attack.

CARF Accredited

GW Rehabilitation Services are accredited by The Joint Commission and the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) for medical rehabilitation and stroke rehabilitation services.

 The GW Sleep Center is accredited by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine.

Blue Distinction Center for Spine Surgery^SM

The George Washington University Hospital has been designated a Blue Distinction Center for Spine Surgery by CareFirst BlueCross Blue Shield.  Each Blue Distinction® facility meets objective clinical measures that are developed with input from expert physicians' and medical organizations' recommendations. Blue Distinction Centers for Spine Surgery provide comprehensive inpatient spine surgery services, including discectomy, fusion and decompression procedures.

GW Hopital Receives Get with the Guidelines 2011 Gold Plus Achievement Award from the American Heart Association / Stroke Association. The Gold Award award recognizes the hospital’s commitment and success in implementing a higher standard of stroke care by ensuring that stroke patients receive treatment according to nationally accepted standards and recommendations.
