On-Q Painbuster

The On-Q Painbuster provides a new and significantly better option for postoperative pain relief. The device consists of a small, high-tech balloon that holds local anesthetic and a tiny, specially designed tube that delivers the anesthetic directly into a surgical incision. This device soaks the surgical site with local anesthetic to create a numbing effect while keeping the rest of the patient's body normal and comfortable. The completely portable On-Q Painbuster is designed to work continually for up to five days with little or no management by the patient or caregiver.

The primary benefit of the On-Q Painbuster is to provide pain relief for postoperative patients without the need for narcotic painkillers and the side effects and longer recovery that accompany them. This device decreases the potential for breakthrough pain and allows patients to return to normal activity and body functioning faster than commonly used pain-relieving narcotics.

A recent study found the On-Q Painbuster to be a best practice in postsurgical pain relief. The study found that in addition to higher patient satisfaction, the On-Q reduced patients' stays an average of one day and lowered infection rates.

The On-Q Painbuster has been found to be appropriate for relieving pain after a number of different surgeries. It has been used and shown success in the following surgical areas:

  • General
  • Orthopaedics
  • OB-GYN
  • Cardio-thoracic
  • Plastic Surgery
  • Colorectal
  • Podiatry

The GW Hospital is proud to offer its patients this best practice in postsurgical pain relief. Ask your doctor if the On-Q Painbuster is the right option for your postoperative pain relief.
